Here's a bit of information on Arcade Cards that we put together from information we were able to find here and there:
    ARCADE CARDS:
During the early 1900s, ARCARD cards were bought for a penny(thus, penny arcade card) in the arcade machines – most popular and sought after were movie stars, cowboys and boxers.
Entertainment was limited in the early 1900s (no internet) so people went to the movies, boardwalks, and of course the arcades.  The penny arcade card dispensing machines and other machines were produced by a company called ESCO and were installed at the town annual fairs and carnivals.
The Arcade Cards were the first nationally distributed trading card without any advertising purpose – the card was the product itself and were purchased for a penny from the machines.  The machines were only installed at the fairs and moved from city to city so you had to wait for the fair or carnival to come to town making the cards scarce and today are very collectable.
Most were the size of about 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" and some were in the form of a postcard so you could send it off to friends.
