Serbian scientists have discovered a new species of beetle, which they propose to name after Novak Djokovic

Serbian scientists have discovered a new species of beetle, which they propose to name after Novak Djokovic, to celebrate the end of the Serbian tennis player’s career on Thursday, October 7, to mark the first ever Olympic Games of Serbia in 2012.

The beetle from the mountainous part of the country was named after Djokovic because the discovery was made in the area where the Serb has lived his life in the past.

The beetle called Pteronchorides pampangensis, which is closely related to the Pteronchorides ellioti species complex and was discovered for the first time, is believed to be the only representative of the new species in the natural habitat, according to scientists.

It can be considered a new evolutionary step for Pteronchorides species complex and their classification under the genus Pteronchoridus, said Zorica Puhin, an invertebrate taxonomist and curator of Palaeontological Department of the Museum of Belgrade.

“As far as this species is concerned, Pteronchorides species appear to have disappeared for the time being, meaning that no descendants are known after it,” the expert added.

Djokovic retired at the age of 32 on Thursday, and on a day which started in the Serb capital of Belgrade on Wednesday with an emotional victory over American Andy Murray in the men’s singles final at the Olimpija Stadium in the first round of the ATP Tour tournament in Belgrade, it was officially revealed that Novak had reached his 25th birthday on Friday.

The Serbian player, who is a four-time World Champion has a total of 15 Grand Slam titles, has represented his country at various events in Europe, Asia, North America and South America.

A few hours before his official retirement, Djokovic said he would not play any tennis for at least four months,
