The Iranian-Canadian director Mohammad Reza Foroutan has been barred from leaving Tehran despite travelling to the UK to attend the annual London film fest on Thursday night, his wife says.
His wife Aline Foroutan, said she was shocked and angered when she learned of his ban from leaving the country.
She told the Guardian: “I just want to go to London, it’s my country. I want to go to the BFI and see one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen in my life – it’s her, it’s her and her children, it’s them. It’s a good time to be a Canadian.”
The Guardian understands the director is banned from leaving the central Iranian province due to a security threat.
The director is currently in the UK preparing to attend the prestigious London film festival, which will open later this weekend. The first day of the festival will be dedicated to the Iranian-Canadian director’s work.
