Letters to the Editor: Why I am telling my neighbors that Kevin de León must resign if he were to be the next sheriff

As a concerned resident of this corner of San Francisco, I am not in the least bit alarmed by the recent rise of Kevin de León’s profile.

In fact, I wish it were higher. The fact that he is such a wonderful guy and a wonderful public servant is a great tribute to his character and his talent.

I’m sorry he got to high-fived Mayor Edwin Lee for being the first Latino candidate elected to a major-party mayoral post in the country.

However, as he is the first Latino candidate in the country to be elected to his party’s mayoral ticket, I feel obligated to make him uncomfortable.

Mr. de León has come under fire for remarks made in a recent interview in the newspaper that were described as racist, which he apologized for. There is no question that he should have followed the example set by his campaign manager and deleted the offending words.

Nevertheless, he chose to stand by his comments. He is no dummy. And, despite the fact that he has the most politically safe position in the country, I feel he should resign if elected sheriff of Alameda County.

We live in a country and a city where racial profiling seems to be a daily occurrence — at the port, of course, even when we’re not. But it becomes more commonplace as we move up the food chain.

This kind of racial profiling is one reason why the Alameda County Board of Supervisors unanimously endorsed Sheriff Lee’s recall in 2008. A sheriff who has publicly denounced racial profiling in the county is, by definition, a sheriff who has failed to address the issue in ways that are demonstrably better than the status quo.

I’m not a fan of this sheriff. But I’m not prepared to say that de León is a racist. I don’t have the evidence he needs to prove my point, but based on the evidence of the people in this community, I believe that de León is a very good sheriff, and we should hope he’s elected.
