‘More grand slams’: Carlos Alcaraz already has sights set on 2023 glory after US Open triumph

Carlos Alcaraz has already secured a spot at next year’s US Open, following a breakthrough tournament as a result of his success at the Rogers Cup.

The Argentinian has now confirmed he will join the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as a member of the American squad that goes to Melbourne, where they will face off against the world No.1 and Spain’s David Ferrer on Monday.

The 30-year-old will be competing in his sixth Grand Slam event this season, a record for a Briton.

He said: “I didn’t realise it was going to be a Grand Slam. I thought I would go straight from the World Tour Finals in London to the US Open.

“I was very excited when I heard the draw was Wimbledon, which I don’t mind playing the four majors, I love playing those tournaments.

“But I had so many good friends in the draw that I just wanted to go straight to the Open.

“I don’t mind playing four out of the seven. There are six in this draw for sure so I’m not going to go out and try and win all four majors.

“I’m going to do my best and I’m going to try my best. I feel confident that if I play the whole year in the top 10, playing great every match, then in Melbourne I will be there.”

Carlos Alcaraz celebrates his triumph at the Rogers Cup, where he beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the final.

Alcaraz is the only Briton on the American roster, along with Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, Canada’s Milos Raonic, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, and Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.

WTA tennis star Sam Stosur has also confirmed he will be in
