This is part of the 2019 COVID (Cycle Through and Evaporate) testing blitz, which says over 100 Canadian cities have reached out about testing.

“We’re a simple water quality testing experiment. We’re using bikes in the streets, asking people in the street,” says Steve Shoop, professor and head of the expert water quality division at the Queen’s University School of Freshwater Science.

According to Shoop, in 2013/14, 3,117 people got tested, and that number had increased significantly since to nearly 12,000 in 2017.

He says Canadians are more aware about water quality and drinking it is a matter of public health.

“We’re certainly in the middle of a global catastrophe that’s occurred over the last 30 years, but it’s very important that we have an international conversation about the threat of water contamination.”

“The tools are really simple. We don’t need to develop some fancy apparatus.”

He says it’s not a hard sell to get people to participate.

“We know there’s a group of people who are very curious, who want to know their water,” he says.

“If we can get this in front of those people and get their response, it’s going to be meaningful.

“It will inform all decisions that are being made about water.”

He says he has been involved in the campaign since its inception and it’s been very popular so far.

“In Toronto right now, people are standing out in the pouring rain, with plastic cups, testing their water,” he says.

“The response has been great.”
